I ended up picking up Google Pixel 4, as I wanted a phone with more security as the news of more and more phones that are being hacked.
I chose the Pixel 4 as the phone always connects to a TLS DNS server so it can’t be intercepted, or maybe not intercepted as easily.
I didn’t get the Pixel 4 XL as I really don’t want a large object in my pocket all the time, I mean I only have room for one large object in my pants…. But for real, to me, the extra-large was just too big.
Honestly, the first thing I noticed on the phone was the screen, not only the beautiful screen resolution that sits 1080 x 2280 resolution. But I also liked the way it felt to the touch, so smooth. Almost, too smooth, I set it on a bench in a meeting at work, the table was only slightly tilted, and it slipped right off the desk. Going to find a cover that has a bit of grip on it.
But the Gorilla glass adds a nice touch to the screen. Scratch-resistant, sand and water-resistant. From the tech specs, it can go into 1.5 meters of water for up to 30 minutes, maybe I will give this a test later when I’m done with it.
Another feature I like is the face recognition to unlock the screen, as soon as I look at the screen it unlocks the phone, I don’t need to enter the password, this sometimes fails at night, which is understandable, just have to enter my passcode and it unlocks the phone.
The phone also comes with a built-in security scan that checks applications for known malware, so this is another layer of security that I liked.
Their biggest selling point seems to be Gestures, which, is a nice addition, but a novelty at best from what I can tell. It doesn’t seem to work as it should, tried changing tracks a million times and it didn’t work. I’m thinking in time this will get better and better.
The biggest reason for this phone is private DNS. I love this feature as I believe I had an eavesdropper at one point on one of my phones. This will allow a secure connection to the servers that can’t be tampered with.
I also can have my VPN service auto-connect whenever I’m using the phone, I no longer have to remember to connect before I start browsing the internet. You don’t want anyone intercepting your traffic, that is a given, make sure you always stay safe.
A really cool feature is that you can also squeeze the bottom of your phone, it will give a bit and this will bring up the Google Assistant, you can ask questions and it will search the internet for you.
The voice commands are fun, but really will only use them in certain situations, such as maybe my friends and I are all having trouble remembering something, I may ask google so everyone can hear the answer.
Battery life is pretty much bad. I wish it did last longer, but these days there isn’t a time I’m not within arms reach of a charger, so it’s not the end of the world. But nervous if it starts this bad, will it just get worse as time goes on.
It has a feature called night light, this will help you not strain your eyes when your reading something and they claim that it will help you sleep, but time will tell, will have to try it out a couple of nights.
It also has adaptive brightness, this is supposed to get a sense of the lighting in the room and it will adjust the display to better match the reading environment, but I haven’t seen too much action at of it, or maybe I just haven’t noticed.
The camera on the phone is really good with a lot of features. It can zoom in really far, which is nice if you need the feature. Also, they have a night mode that looks really cool when you take a picture, handy if you’re in a dark situation.
All in all, it is a solid phone for what I want anyways. I have a hard time upgrading phones as all the bells and whistles become something you never use after a while, and it just becomes at its core, a phone.
That’s all for a quick review of the phone. If you’re looking for any help with your Technology, don’t forget I offer IT support help and offer remote support for people who are on Windows 10.
